I was recently commissioned to do a large painting of this scene and thought it would be fun to do as a daily painting. This scene is from a drive to Santa Fe, New Mexico several years back. It was the end of the day when the light was low and glowing across the landscape on the Colorado - New Mexico border. I have painted from the photo reference of that trip many times as I caught such a magical moment that continues to inspire me.

Heart on the Mend

I am seeing Valentine's Day items in the stores, so I thought I would try doing a mixed media approach to depicting this holiday all about love.

Valentine's Day is mostly for lovers, but who hasn't had their heart broken at some time? I actually thought of this composition while listening to Christina Perry's Jar of Hearts - a GREAT song.

This 6x6 heart is on a masonite panel and is textured with crackle paste. The heart has cracks in it, but has red sateen ribbons holding it together - on the mend I'm thinking.

This piece is done on 8x10 paper. I wanted to do the entire thing in dry media. I almost collaged it to canvas a few times. My acrylics were calling my name! I stood my ground though, and stuck to the original plan. Graphite, Conte, Charcoal and Chalk Pastel. Lots of layers. I hope to incorporate more of these drawings into my work. You may be wondering where I have been...well, I just took a little time to recover from the YFH (Year From Hell). But now, I am back in the saddle, sketchbooks filled with new ideas just waiting to come alive on the canvas--or paper. Like this piece for Valentine's Day. The series of angels on paper that I painted for Christmas was so popular (ie: sold like hotcakes) that I am going to continue with Valentine images.

These paintings are a combination of acrylic, collage and mixed media on heavy duty professional watercolor paper. They are all matted to 8x10" (standard frame size) with a white archival mat and come in a clear protective bag.

That was the last of November and before the final varnish today I gave it to Meaghen to add some of her personal ideas around the edges or anywhere she chose.

This painting was shipped to Colorado yesterday. It would like really nice with a pewter/plein air moulding. I tried framing it in a black moulding and it was too much. Too much contrast between the painting and the frame. I used a different color palette on this painting...much more yellows and greens than normal. Thanks for looking at this blog. Kay

In this extreme close up, you can see the blue and turquoise notes that are not very evident in the above photos. I just LOVE adding those little complimentary touches toward the end of a painting.

The snow day afforded me the opportunity to lay low and work at the easel today. I enjoyed working with iridescent acrylics on the Ampersand Claybord panels.

Buried Treasure

This mixed media piece features multiple transparent washes over a copper-painted canvas. The squares are wood covered with gold metallic origami foil.

The thin wood squares were flat to begin with, but became curved when they were embedded in gesso and acrylic medium. I actually thought the curves they took on were a plus - another example of a happy accident.

Because of the metallic paints and foil, the light bounces around and gives the painting a warm glow. It kind of reminds me of a warm fireplace.
